The Riverhead Police Department reported that Kenneth Hamilton, age 47, of Wading River, was arrested for driving while intoxicated after his vehicle struck the cruiser.
Officers responded to a report of a possible single-vehicle crash on Wading River Manor Road near State Route 25 in Wading River at about 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2, police said.
Police determined that the driver involved in the crash had failed to negotiate the roadway due to fog, and crashed on the shoulder.
The two responding police cruisers blocked the roadway and directed traffic while the vehicle was removed.
One of the officers returned to his vehicle and sat in the front passenger seat, authorities said.
A short time later, a northbound vehicle driven by Hamilton struck the cruiser, pushing it off the road and onto the eastern shoulder, authorities said.
Police said both vehicles were extensively damaged in the crash.
The officer was taken by Wading River Fire Department Ambulance to a hospital in Riverhead to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police said Hamilton was not injured in the crash, and officers at the scene found that he was noticeably impaired and smelled of alcohol.
He was brought into police custody and held for arraignment, police said.
